Goeika is a form of Japanese Buddhist music consisting of short poems of praise sung to the accompaniment of hand bells and small metal gongs. Goeika performances are common at Obon celebrations, ceremonies marking the Buddha’s birth (Tanjo-e), enlightenment (Jodo-e), passing into Nirvana (Nehan-e), and ceremonies honoring the founders of temples.
At Zenshuji, Goeika is led by a master teacher and plays an important role in ritual services and other events throughout the year. For more information on the Goeika club, please email us at info@zenshuji.org.
