SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER 2011 EVENTS
The next One Day Sitting, “A Day of Zazen” will be on the 28th in August, 25th in September, 30th in October, from 7:10am to 4:40 pm. It will include 8 periods of zazen, a Dharma talk by Daigaku Sokan, breakfast, lunch, and so on. Please see the flyer for the schedule. NEW MINISTER ARRIVING
Zenshuji will have a second minister arriving on September 4, 2011. Toho Sensei will be here with his wife to assist Kojima Sensei, the Temple and congregation. Please introduce yourself to him and make him feel welcome.
KEIRO-KAI LUNCHEON
Keiro Kai, which is honoring our senior members who are 80 years and older, is scheduled for September 18, 2011 @ 12:00pm. Ohigan Service will be held prior to the Luncheon at 11:00am. Please make sure to put in your reservation for the delicious box lunch. Letters have been sent asking for your participation. Please respond as soon as possible.
OTAKIAGE: Burning Ceremony
You are cordially welcome to attend the Otakiage (Burning Ceremony) on October 2, 2011 at Huntington State Beach. This is the opportunity to discard items like Darumas with two colored in eyes to symbolize success of a fulfilled wish; old family butsudan; important papers no longer needed; items that are important that you just don’t want to throw in the trash; etc. Enjoy the beach and A potluck luncheonfollowing after the service. We would like to have people RSVP to Kojima Sensei @ (213) 624-8658. He will also tell you how to get to Huntington State Beach and the Life Guard Station Number where we meet.
HALLOWEEN PARTY

A DAY OF ZAZEN: One Day of Sitting Meditation
PROJECT MOMOTARO
Grateful Crane Ensemble will present PROJECT MOMOTARO. It is a live musical with Japanese Children songs. They will perform 3 classic Japanese Children Stories: (1) The Tortoise & the Hare, (2) Tanabata, and (3) Momotaro: Peach Boy. SAVE: SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 24,2011 @ 1:00pm @ ZENSHUJI SOTO MISSION. We look forward to seeing the entire family for an afternoon of fun. ADMISSION IS FREE. SOTO ZEN Buddhism International Symposium
From October 4-6, the Soto Zen Buddhism International Symposium will be held in Japan at Chokokuji, Tokyo Branch Temple of Diahozan Eiheiji. More than 600 Zen priests from around the world will be in attendance. Ceremony, lecture and various discussions are on the itinerary. Since this is a special event, there is a very reasonable package price which includes hotel/lodging, meals, and registration (does not include flight or transportation). The next Study Group will begin on Thursday, Oct. 20th from 7:30 – 8:50 pm. We plan to meet for a total of seven times, ending on Dec. 15th (there will be no classes on Nov. 24th and Dec. 1st). This group is a continuation of the previous Study Group. We will continue reading in The Essence of Zen. It is perfectly acceptable to join this group even if you were not part of the previous group. The Essence of Zen is a book that we can open any section and we will immediately be in touch with the important points of Zen practice. We will sit in zazen for the last 30 minutes of each class.
